In de eerste Amerikaanse film van de Israëlische regisseur Joseph Cedar (Footnote; Beaufort) zien we topacteur Richard Gere naast onder meer Lior Ashkenazi en Charlotte Gainsbourg. Norman Oppenheimer is een kleine handelaar in New York die via zijn connecties probeert lucratieve transacties te sluiten. De meeste van zijn 'vrienden' zien hem liever gaan dan komen. Wanneer hij in contact komt met de Israëlische onderminister Micha Eshel (Ashkenazi) doet hij hem een duur paar schoenen cadeau. Drie jaar later is Eshel premier van Israel en wil Norman dit contact uitbuiten, ten bate van zichzelf en van zijn noodlijdende synagoge. De Amerikaanse recensenten zijn positief. Todd McCarthy (hollywoodreporter.com) schrijft: '(...) Cedar impressively creates a complex and intricately detailed portrait of the web of political, financial, social and religious affiliations that has everything to do with how the world works. (...)' Zijn conclusie: 'A man unwelcome in life, quite welcome onscreen.'

About Joseph Cedar

Yossef (Joseph) Cedar (Hebrew: יוסף סידר; born August 31, 1968) is an Israeli film director and screenwriter.

Biography

Cedar was born to an Orthodox Jewish family in New York City. His father is biochemist Howard Cedar. When Joseph was 6, his family moved to Israel, and he grew up in the Bayit VeGan neighborhood in Jerusalem. He studied in a Yeshiva High School. In the Israeli army he served as a paratrooper. After graduating in philosophy and history of theatre from the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, he studied cinema studies at New York University.

Film career

When he returned to Israel, he started working on the screenplay for his debut film, Time of Favor (2000), for which he moved and lived for two years in the Israeli settlement Dolev. The film won six Ophir Awards, including Best Picture.
