Regisseur Steven Soderbergh (Sex, lies and videotape, Out of sight, Erin Brockovich) liet zich voor deze ingenieuze film over de drugswereld inspireren door de Britse serie Traffik, die Alastair Reid eind jaren tachtig voor Channel 4 maakte. De film vertelt drie losstaande verhalen die te onderscheiden zijn doordat Soderbergh gebruik heeft gemaakt van verschillende kleurenfilters. Met in de hoofdrollen Michael Douglas, Benicio del Toro, Catherine Zeta-Jones. De film werd in Amerika door zowel critici als door het grote publiek enthousiast ontvangen en kreeg diverse prijzen waaronder vier Oscars (o.a. Beste Filmregie). Steven Andrew Soderbergh (; born January 14, 1963) is an American film director, producer, screenwriter, cinematographer, and editor. An early pioneer of modern independent cinema, Soderbergh is an acclaimed and prolific filmmaker.

Soderbergh's directorial-breakthrough indie drama Sex, Lies, and Videotape (1989)—lifted him into the public spotlight as a notable presence in the film industry.
